March is Child Life Month! Happy Child Life to All of My Fellow CCLS!
Did you know that in addition to being the Child/Youth Program Coordinator at CSCCNJ I am a Certified Child Life Specialist?
What is Child Life?
Child Life services primarily focus on providing psychosocial support to children and families coping with stressors and anxiety related to an illness and/or hospitalization experience. Certified Child Life Specialists utilize their knowledge of child development to facilitate and develop appropriate support programs and interventions.
Play is the language of children and is one of the primary modalities through which a CLS will connect to children and provide opportunities for expression. Often times a child is unable to express themselves with words but will allow us into their mind through their play.
What is the Background of a Child Life Specialist?
Typically speaking, a Child Life Specialist will have obtained a Master’s degree specifically in Child Life as well as sat for the certification exam and is accredited through the Association of Child Life Professionals. “The specific skill set that a child life specialist can bring to a community center is ideal for families confronting chronic and life threatening illnesses.” (Association of Child Life Professionals)
